Flicker all dressed up for Spring!

On the 8th of April and the 9th we have had this visitor here. I was lucky to have gotten a few shots. So far that is the only time we have spotted it, out front of our house, about 20 feet from the kitchen window. Seeing this Flicker brings back fond memories of back in the 1960's when a male Flicker came to our house year after year. We lived on Sunset Drive and this male Flicker became infatuated with seeing himself in the reflection of our car windows and mirrors, even the windows of the house. If a window to the car was left open, he would actually go in the car so he could gaze at himself in the rearview mirror. Nila's poodle grooming customers often were surprised to find a Flicker Woodpecker in their cars when they returned if they had left their windows open. We finally made him very happy by giving him his very own mirror in one of our poplar trees. He returned to our home each spring for many years and we all became as fond of him as any of our own "pets."
COMMON FLICKER - "Common in open country and large trees. Flicker are jay sized woodpeckers with brown back, no white on wings, and a black breast crescent."

End of latest beautiful bird watching. Al - Gr
